The Benefits of Sunbathing

日光浴の効果

In Malaysia, where the sun is much stronger than in Japan, many people avoid the sun out of concern for skin damage caused by UV rays, such as sunburn. It is true that excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, sunspots, wrinkles, and, in severe cases, skin cancer, as well as adverse effects on the eyes. However, moderate sunbathing offers many benefits and is actually considered a healthy habit.

First, a little-known fact is that exposure to sunlight triggers the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin. While vitamin D can be obtained from food, our bodies synthesize significantly more of it from sunlight. Consequently, people who spend a lot of time indoors and have fewer opportunities to be in the sun tend to be deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, and a deficiency increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Therefore, vitamin D is an essential nutrient for maintaining bone health. Additionally, vitamin D plays a vital role in the immune system and can help boost your immunity.

It is also known that sunbathing triggers the secretion of a substance called serotonin in the brain. Serotonin, often called the “happiness hormone,” helps alleviate anxiety and tension, relieve stress, and stabilize mood, while also offering preventive effects against depression. Even just stepping outside for a little sunlight when you’re tired, or simply feeling the light through a window, can refresh your mood and improve your concentration.

As you can see, sunbathing offers many benefits, so try to make a conscious effort to spend some time in the sun each day. There is no need for prolonged sun exposure; since the time required for vitamin D synthesis is estimated to be just about 5 to 10 minutes, the risk of skin damage is minimal. For those concerned about UV rays or with sensitive skin, the morning hours, when UV levels are lower, are safer. In particular, getting sunlight in the morning is highly recommended because it effectively promotes serotonin secretion and helps regulate your body clock.
